Did my Mom just tell me to get high?????

Let’s talk about something controversial today, Marijuana.  This post might shock some of you that I would write on this and it may even make some angry.  I am not trying to sway anyone’s opinion here.  If you agree with Marijuana or if you don’t, that is your right.  I feel very passionate about the health benefits of marijuana and simply want to give out some information.

This week, the Editor of The Minot Daily News posted an article on why Marijuana should not be legalized.  I was dumbfounded by his writing in the article.  He had no facts, education or information on the matter.  It was merely an opinion piece if you ask me.  Some things he tried to state as possible facts were incorrect.  I could not believe this was actually printed in a newspaper by the Editor.  It is totally his right to believe marijuana needs to stay illegal, but he should have had better facts and information in his article.  That article prompted my decision to write this post.

First, I want to state my opinion on a popular thought that Marijuana is a gateway drug.  This is only my opinion.  I have to say…. REALLY?!? It is not a gateway drug.  Recently I have started seeing posts that vaccinating your children will lead to them becoming hard drug users because you taught them to use needles at a young age.  This concept is the same as marijuana being a gateway drug, it is absolutely ridiculous.  Why not start saying that giving grape juice to your toddler will be a gateway to them becoming an alcoholic.  Or maybe giving your children sugar as a child will lead to them doing Cocaine as an adult. Blaming anything as a gateway drug is just silly.  There are bigger issues there if they become an Alcoholic or Major Drug user.

Ok, now I will stop with my opinion piece and get on to more education.  When we think of Marijuana most people think of a bunch of worthless, out of work dudes high as a kite on their couch with the major munchies. There is still some of that, BUT It is so much more than that. There is a huge movement of people that use marijuana for the health benefits.  Most who use, you cannot even tell.  They still go to work, they still raise a family, etc.  The average marijuana user is not what society thinks.  If you walked into a Marijuana Dispensary in a legal state, you would find more soccer mom looking women or average blue collar looking men.  My oldest daughter lives in Colorado where it is legal for personal use.  She says Marijuana is just not for her. She has the opinion most have, that a marijuana user is a useless pothead.  I tried, one day, to discuss the benefits of marijuana and why it is a good thing.  She replied, “Did my mom just tell me to get high?”  LOL.  I cannot encourage her to use marijuana because she is not 21 yet.  BUT, once she reaches legal age, using it could definitely give her many benefits.  If she chooses not to use it, that is her right and I support whatever she wants to believe.

Did you know there are hundreds upon hundreds of different strains of Marijuana? These strains fall into 2 major types: 1. Indica  and 2. Sativa.  We also have a smaller type or maybe even a subtype  3. Hybrids.  Different strains and different types do different things.  Some relieve pain, some help you sleep, some curb appetite, some encourage appetite, some reduce stress, some relieve anxiety, some help with depression, some give you energy, some help/cure cancer, etc…. The list can go on and on with the benefits of Marijuana.  How it affects you largely depends on type and levels of CBD and THC.

According to www.HighTimes.com  (http://www.hightimes.com/read/5-differences-between-sativa-and-indica) …..

“Plants are classified according to a system dating back hundreds of years. Cannabis sativa L. is the binomial name or the species name for the cannabis plant. It is from the family of plants known as Canabaceae, which includes other plants like Hops and Hackberries.
Cannabis can be subdivided into two main subspecies sativa and indica. There are variations to those sub species in the form of hybrid’s and one other subspecies……..
Sativa strains originated in an area around the equator and can be found in countries like Colombia, Mexico, Thailand and several African Nations.
The Indica strains originated from a higher altitude and can be found predominantly in countries known for their hash culture such as Morocco, Afghanistan, Nepal and Turkey. These plants are shorter and fuller plants compared to their sativa counterparts.
The differences between indica and sativa are:
Sativas will always grow taller than their Indica sisters. Indoors I've seen sativas get as big as six feet while indicas tend to stay short - around three feet.
As a connoisseur smoker there is nothing like a sativa high. The sativas are like a Chateau Lafitte Rothschild ’65: A fine wine that tastes even better with age. I’ve smoked sativas that have been cured for more than 24 months and the high had no ceiling, meaning that with every new joint you smoked you just got higher and higher. With the indicas I find the effect to be quite universal across multiple different strains. It is usually a couch-locked “I wanna sit and play Playstation” kind of feeling. That being said, it is actually the indicas that have the strongest analgesic effect when it comes to medical cannabis, it’s usually the sativas that have a higher amount of THC compared to CBDs.”

Let’s break that down just a little more.  What is the THC and CBD compounds they talk about??  The Weedblog (http://www.theweedblog.com/what-is-the-difference-between-thc-and-cbd/) wrote:

“The cannabis plant contains dozens of cannabinoids. The most well known cannabinoid for a long time has been tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but as more scientific research is conducted involving cannabis and its ability to be used as a medicine, more and more people are learning about other cannabinoids, expecially cannabidiol (CBD). The last couple of years interest in CBD has grown exponentially, as it’s been featured on numerous television episodes showing how well it works in treating people who suffer from severe epilepsy. One of the most common questions I get asked these days is ‘what is the difference between THC and CBD?’
The most important thing that I try to get people to grasp is that THC will get you high (assuming you consume enough of it) and CBD will not. THC has psychoactive properties that affect your brain and give you a ‘buzz’ while CBD does not. I have talked to many, many people that avoided medical cannabis at all costs simply and only because they didn’t want to be high all the time. Once they understand that there are dozens of cannabinoids, and that they all don’t get you stoned (specifically CBD), they are much more open to the idea of trying medical cannabis.”

If you were to google CBD, you would find tons of websites related to the medical properties of CBD and how thousands are curing disease with CBD strains of Marijuana.  If taken in small does, one can even take daily as a supplement such as a vitamin.  Reset.me (http://reset.me/story/vitamin-weed-small-daily-doses-cannabis-unlock-optimum-health/) wrote an excellent article with a video anti(https://youtu.be/_R3swGg9iUw)  on Marijuana as a daily vitamin weed. University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center (CU) in Denver is conducting several different studies on marijuana and CBD.  One study is the effects on CBD and epilepsy (http://time.com/3264691/medical-marijauna-epilepsy-research-charlottes-web-study/) and another one the effects of CBD while performing specific tasks such as giving a speech.

Many people argue that Marijuana is just bad, if it wasn’t bad then our Government would not have made it illegal.  Well, don’t even get me started on our Government.  I will say that our Government says that Sugar, Cigarettes, Alcohol, and Prescription drugs are all ok and legal.  Yet all those things kill thousands every single year and increase crime.  Marijuana cannot be overdosed (well guess you could but it would take so much I cant imagine a person ever ingesting that much).  Marijuana has never been truly related to or responsible for any deaths. God created this plant that has tons of health benefits and very natural yet we make it illegal.  Society thinks it is better to go to the Doctor and be put on 6 different pharmaceutical, man-made, chemical filled, medications with many side effects, some even deadly for health issues rather than use a natural God given plant.  I don’t understand this.  Until the 1930s, Marijuana was legal in the USA. As a matter of fact from 1600-1890s it was strongly encouraged then required to grow Hemp and became legal tender in 3 states. Marijuana was in over the counter products and even used in hospitals.

I am not trying to get everyone to think like me.  I do realize that some people just don’t agree with marijuana or do not think that it should be legalized.  I simply wanted to give out a little information so that everyone could know there are many health benefits to Marijuana.  We should get rid of the stereotype that anyone who smokes marijuana is simply a useless pothead.   This isn’t the case. By the way, smoking it isn’t the only way to ingest marijuana.  We now have tinctures, oils, massage oil, salves, edibles, juicing it,etc.  People of all ages, even children, and people of all types use and benefits from Marijuana. I hope I was able to help give you some information that will help you more understand Marijuana and get rid of the stereotype that our society has.
